Then the courtiers asked the King (The Bodhisatta): “Why do you donate your eyes? What do you expect back, by doing so?” repeating a stanza:

“What is the reward you seek? Is it life, beauty, joy, strength?
O king, what is the motive for this deed?
Why should such a supreme person, such as you, the king of Sivi
For the sake of the next world, give up his eyes?”

The king (The Bodhisatta) answered them:

“By giving my eyes, glory is not my goal. I do not give with the expectation of glory.
I don't expect sons, wealth, or kingdoms to control:
This is how the good people of the past lived;
I give, because it makes me happy, to see them happy.”

“Self-sacrifice is the best offering one could give,
without having any expectations. A donation where you look at the benefit of the other, rather than your own self-benefit, that is the greatest of all donations."

එවිට රාජ සභිකයෝ “ඇයි ඇස් දන් දුන්නේ” කියලා ඇසුවා.

“ජීවිතය, අලංකාරය, ප්‍රීතිය, දීර්ඝායුශය හෝ ශක්තිය ලැබෙන නිසාද ඔබ ඔබේ ඇස් දෙක දුන්නේ? ඔබේ ඇස් දන් දීමෙන් ඔබට ලැබෙන ප්‍රයෝජනය කුමක්ද?
රජතුමනි, මෙයට හේතුව කුමක්ද?
ඇයි සිවි රාජ්‍යයේ රජතුමා
ඔහුගේ ඊළඟ ජීවිතය වෙනුවෙන්, ඔහුගේ දෑස් අත්හහැරියේ?”

රජු (බෝධිසත්ත) ඔවුන්ට මෙසේ පිළිතුරු දුන්නේය.

“මහිමය මගේ ඉලක්කය නොවේ. මම මහිමය අපේක්ෂාවෙන් දන් දෙන්නේ නැහැ
මම පුතුන් හෝ ධනය හෝ රාජ්‍යයන් පාලනය කිරීමට අපේක්ෂාවෙන් පරිත්‍යාග නොකරමි.
අතීතයේ සිටි යහපත් මිනිසුන් ජීවත් වූයේ මෙසේ ය;
මම දන් දෙනවා, ඔවුන් සතුටු වෙනවා දැකීමෙන් මට සතුටක් දැනෙන නිසා.”

"ආත්ම පරිත්‍යාගය,
සෑම දෙයකින්ම හොඳම පූජාව. තමංගේ අපේක්ෂා දිහා බලන්නේ නැතුව, තමංට එන යහපත, වාසිය, දිහා බලන්නේ නැතුව දෙන දානය තමා හොඳම දානය."
