While presenting the status of HU journals, Dr. Rahmeto Abebe, Director of RPD pointed out that the academic staff of HU have undertaken research on a wide variety of projects spanning from small scale disciplinary to large scale multidisciplinary initiatives. He remarked that 163 government sponsored research projects are undergoing, 498 research outputs are published on several internationally accredited journals, and 25 others are published on HU journals, just this year. In his presentation, the director emphasized that rigorous work is needed to sustain the two nationally accredited HU journals and strengthen the remaining eight which appear to have big differences in their performance so far.

Dr. Solomon Benor, Lead Executive of Research and Technology Transfer at MoE, presented the international, regional and national trends in journal accreditation process as well as the challenges and lessons learned from the process at FDRE's Ministry of Education.

There was a warm discussion following the presentations whereby participants raised questions and concerns, and also forwarded constructive comments for the betterment of research undertakings, culture of publication, academic integrity and better contributions to the national development at large. Dr. Solomon and Dr. Tafesse have also reflected on the points and underlined critical measures to be taken as a way forward.

More than 50 participants composed of college deans, research associate deans, journal editors and managers at HU have participated in the one day training held at the African Union Hall, HU.

international institutions and countries to ensure peace and development. She disclosed that KOICA is interested to work in collaboration with HU on Agriculture, Health and ICT. Thus, she explained the purpose of their visit as a chance to conduct a feasibility assessment on the potentials of the university to collaborate in the aforementioned areas.

Finally, the team visited three campuses: College of Agriculture (COA), College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), and Institute of Technology (IoT) and held discussions about the potential of each college and institute with the campus leaders (Dean, Chief Executive Director and Scientific Director, respectively). Eventually, the team disclosed that they are very happy about their visit and pledged future collaboration as the potentials are great.

While Prof. Zeleke Arficho (Dean, CSSH) appreciated Peace Corps-Ethiopia for its contribution to support the young scholars academic writing skills development and publishing journey and for choosing to partner with Hawassa University, Dr. Daniel Okubit (Manager, Educational Programs at Peace Corps) also acknowledged the commitment of Peace Corps volunteer(Dr Eileen Willingham), HU-ELIC, training program participants from HU, and his staff and emphasized the need to put efforts for the successful completion of the training program from all concerned stakeholders.

HU officials, Dr Tagesse Daniel (Academic Programs Director) and Dr Taye G/Mariam (Post Graduate School Dean), also noted the importance of the training program to boost the quality of education and research and they mentioned that the University recognizes such initiatives and works towards making them successful.

Dr. Mihireteab Abraham, Coordinator of HU-ELIC, remarked that the virtual training program covers five months and ends with possible measurable outcomes including publications, improved academic writing skills, positive attitude towards writing, and a culture of working in collaboration as professionals and institutions. He also pointed out that HU-ELIC is actively working with stakeholders and partners to benefit more staff members and students in the future with regard to English language improvement in particular and academic skills and professional development at large.
