Even though this is a fun thing to do, and i won't be denying its potential use, the most important bit in survival is weight.
How much do you carry?
Well, if i would be on a weekend hike, i could take this with me, it will be easy to use, easy to set up, don't have to worry about wet branches not catching fire etc.
However if i would be on a very long trip, i would bring along just the magnesium pencil sharpener.

This will be one of the few must have items in my bag, because it not only provides an opportunity to help gather loads of wood shavings easily in a short amount of time, the pencil sharpener is made of magnesium, which, if you collect shavings, can help you light that little "birds nest" you create to make a fire with, much easier. (Just scrape off some magnesium shavings from the magnesium pencil sharpener, collect them in the birds nest, and light them with a ferro rod.)
I would only use it sparingly though, for example when it has been raining a lot and i still need to make a fire.
Then combine this with a dakota firehole, and you will be golden.

Never forget, where tools and equipment weigh you down, knowledge and wisdom lift you up.
