What you can and cannot put in compost
All gardeners are well aware that only certain "ingredients" will produce useful, high-quality compost. However, many people often ignore this information and throw whatever they can find into their compost pits.
What can be put into compost:
- grass;
- hay;
- straw;
- leaves of shrubs and trees without signs of disease;
- small branches and twigs;
- eggshells;
- moss;
- turf;
- brewed tea and coffee;
- vegetables, fruits and their remains;
- sawdust, wood shavings;
- bark;
- paper.
Many more items can be added to this list. But this is absolutely unnecessary. The main thing you need to know about the products suitable for composting is that they must be organic and free of toxic substances.
What should not be composted:
- meat scraps and meat dishes;
- lime;
- water with detergents;
- waste products of cats, dogs, people;
- leaves, branches, fruits affected by pests or diseases.
In fact, it is very important to keep a close eye on what goes into the compost. After all, the quality of the future harvest largely depends on the products put into it.
