The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, when it stood on the Orthodox Faith, had its Odigitria, (“the one that shows the way”) - the Kursk Icon of the Sign of the Mother of God. Similarly, our late Metropolitan Ephraim thought that our Church, which is passing its earthly sojourn in the lands of the West, should have its Odigitria, the Roman Icon of the Mother of God, the oldest and most venerated Icon of the ancient Orthodox lands of the West.

That is why, year after year, we come to venerate this icon here in Rome, asking the Mother of God to extend her grace through her icon on our Church.
