Arrival of Rurik in Ladoga

Where did Rus' come from? This question has interested concerned people since time immemorial.

The legendary Prince Rurik is considered the founder of the first powerful dynasty of rulers of the state that arose on the banks of the Volkhov, Ladoga and Ilmen.

Historians argued for many years about who the Varangians were, and artists simply sang of this epic story: the arrival of warriors in Staraya Ladoga, the appearance of a prince, apparently a strong-willed, powerful man.

Viktor Vasnetsov (1848–1926), created an the end of the 19th century a visual standard of Ancient Rus'. A style that Russia fell in love with, and deeply rooted in the people’s consciousness lies Vasnetsov’s famous “Bogatyrs”.

And here is Rurik. The Knight looks militant, his armor shimmers in the meager northern sun. It’s immediately obvious: the protector and the owner have come. Next to him are brothers, and maybe comrades-in-arms.
Slovenians welcome their future prince with gifts: furs, honey, wine.
The Ladoga aborigines look solemn, behave with dignity, the elders are dressed flashily like boyars. Among them is the recognisable figure of a tall, grey-bearded old man - the “noble man” of Gostomysl.

This is not some wild rabble. Before us are sedate statesmen who have made an important decision. Stately, not bending their backs to anyone. They love their land and act in the interests of the community and people.
And Rurik’s calling does not at all look like a decision made out of powerlessness or despair.

About Vasnetsov in the words of Pushkin: “He did not despise his native country, he knew its purpose...”. He recreated Rus', which one wants to be proud of. It is believed that such a people could build a great power and reach, centuries later, Kamchatka and Turkestan.

And the source of the powerful state is here, on Ladoga. And Vasnetsov glorifies the heroic prologue of Russia, shows it in all the splendor of sparkling helmets.

A native of Tajikistan brought two cars of flowers to Crocus City Hall.
The man laid flowers at the memorial to the victims of the terrorist attack on behalf of his people. He expressed condolences to the relatives of the dead, injured and the entire Russian people.
