This practice is known as Spraghis. It consisted of engraving Christian symbols onto pagan imagery (circles were also commonplace). This was believed to “purify” the pagan sculptures/reliefs of demons and give them “apotropaic” properties. Apotropaic means it was seen as a ward against evil or bad luck.
