Muslims burned copies of the quran because there ware too many abrogations. So much so that some copies started to differ between them. So they choose from all of them the copy that supposed to be the most "updated" one. They had to destroy the rest of copies to not create future confusion among the Muslims.

Once the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) made a united front against the Prophet (ﷺ) and I said to them, 'It may be if he (the Prophet) divorced you, (all) that his Lord (Allah) will give him instead of you wives better than you.' So this verse (the same as I had said) was revealed."
