It is true that most countries allocate huge sums of money to sporting facilities for elite training development, but not at grassroots level, this begging the question : Is this a positive or negative trend? Although the allocation of financial resources to the training of top athletes plays a pivotal role in for maximizing their performance potential and grooming elite sportsmen and sportswomen for important international sporting events, I believe that this is a negative development due to the detrimental effects on the general public.

On the one hand, funding sporting facilities for professional athletes is essential for several reasons. First and foremost, the state-of-the-art technology and training programs countries invest in is tailored to the unique needs of athletes, thereby enhancing their performance. This improvement in performance enables sportsmen to perform at high levels in international sporting events. Therefore, If deprived of constant funding, athletes may struggle to train for major sports competitions, and fail to remain competitive on the international stage.

Furthermore, since elite athletes often serve as ambassadors for their countries, representing national pride and identity on the global stage, the provision of world-class working environments demonstrates a commitment and showcases the country’s sporting achievements. This, in turn, fosters a sense of pride and unity among citizens. From this perspective, funding sports facilities for elite sports development seems a financially wise choice.

These arguments notwithstanding, investing only in the cutting-edge technology for elite sports athletes is unfair. As taxpayers, every citizen should have the right to engage in physical activities and the onus of funding fitness centers equipped with modern technology lies with the governments. The prioritization of top athletes' training while ignoring ordinary people may lead the latter to question the importance of paying taxes, eventually leading to social protests.

Moreover, specialized facilities are generally exorbitantly expensive. Providing these facilities for professional sportsmen and sportsmen often means reducing funds, if not withdrawing, for such facilities for grassroots sports participation. The reduction in financial backing, or withdrawal thereof may have a negative impact on marginalized communities who lack resources for sports centers, which may exacerbate existing health outcomes and contribute to sedentary lifestyle. Funding sporting facilities at the grassroots level, therefore, holds importance in encouraging people to stay healthy.

In conclusion, supporting elite sports development financially is necessary for preparing top athletes for international sporting events and showcasing countries’ commitment to sports accomplishments, the importance of investment in training of elite athletes should not take precedence over that in training of ordinary people, for as taxpayers, they have the same rights as top athletes do, and cutting off financial backing may lead to worsen health outcomes. Therefore, prioritizing sports facilities for top athletes is a negative development.
