Our compost toilets are simply just …

Our compost toilets are simply just a bucket and shavings, sheltered by a shoddy shed built with reclaimed materials. They’ve certainly saved us a fortune on portable toilets. Just like most people who have been used to a flushing toilet, we had low expectations in terms of their functionality and cleanliness, but thankfully they turned out to be easier to maintain and much more hygienic than the portable toilets. We’ve enjoyed the compost loos so much we use one ourselves all the time now we live in a caravan on the farm. I guess the main drawback if you don’t already have a outdoor space and an existing giant pile of other animal manure, is where do you dispose of it? Possibly fungal enzymes could help with the break down of the organic material if left in a pile at the back of your garden if you’re lucky enough to have one? Or perhaps the days lie ahead where you’ll be able to bag it up and sell it for fertiliser, just like they do in Japan.

Great recommendation from The Wessex Nomad, we watched this morning and are now dreaming of putting our bed into our beloved Yaris.

We spent this past Sunday doing one of our favourite walks that’s only a short drive away from the campsite at Wookey Hole. This walk to Ebbor Gorge takes you up into the Mendip Hills to give you panoramic views across Somerset, with Glastonbury Tor taking pride of place in the middle of the horizon. We fell asleep in a grassy knowle whilst enjoying this view. We would highly recommend you give this walk a try, whether you’re staying with us at Dagger Wood or just visiting the area. There is lots of free parking at the Wookey Hole resort, which is also worth a visit for the sheer fun of it, whether you’ve got children or not.

We often shed a tear every time we see a tray of shrooms being shoved into an oven. When it comes to psychoactive varieties in particular, even with the door left open, the mushrooms will be exposed to temperatures above 75c which means a large majority of these compounds will be destroyed. While there are more traditional methods such as sun drying, for larger toadstools like the Fly Agaric, a dehydrator is your best bet. You can pick one up for £30 online. This will mean your shrooms are cracker dry ready to throw into some air tight containers with a few silicon gel packets. They will be preserved for several years using this method, both for edibility and therapeutic use. Studies show the active compounds in fly agaric remained potent for up to 5 years after drying. Stay shroomed, stay strong.

Dagger wood is the perfect campsite for anyone who hates the hustle of the big campsites and wants a more wild experience. It’s beautiful setting, nestled among the hills just outside Bristol, is crossed by the old train line that once crossed the famous Pensford viaduct which offers a stunning covered walk to nearby Clutton for a refreshing pint at the Railway inn. So much to see and do in the area from the Clifton suspension bridge, cheddar gorge and the Roman baths all 30 mins away.

This was the perfect getaway. Quiet, scenic and loads to do. We camped under an ancient oak and had a roaring fire every night while the sun was setting over the hill behind us. Yes it’s wild camping so not hot water and compost toilets.( Which were surprisingly not that bad). This isn’t for everyone but if you’re looking for adventure, beautiful scenery, campfires, peace and quiet and some amazing local attractions then I strongly recommend you give daggerwood campsite a look.
