On Monday, he escalated tensions further by declaring his intention to build a synagogue at the site, which is revered by Muslims as Haram al-Sharif.

This holy Islamic compound, which includes the Al-Aqsa Mosque, has been under the guardianship of the Muslim religious council, the Waqf, since Israel occupied Al Quds during the 1967 Six-Day War.
