Important lesson #3 - If, people at the same place express similar or same symptoms within a short period of time, does it necessarily mean that a "pathogenic virus" is passed between them and caused those symptoms? Can observations alone be used to arrive at conclusions?

As humans, we make a lot of observations. If there are more than one possible explanation for an observation, then how do we know which is right and which is wrong? If there are more than one possible explanation that can be attributed to an observation we make, then we cannot pick just one possible explanation among them and conclude it to be right, rather, we have to investigate the scenario with critical reasoning to arrive at conclusion(s).

For example, if a man makes an observation that his wife comes home late, it doesn't necessarily mean that she is having an affair with someone else. It's just one possible explanation and not the only one. There are other possible explanations like, she would (i) have had extra work to do at office, (ii) got stuck in a traffic, (iii) went to a distant market to buy something, and so on.

Likewise, we make observations where (i) people at the same place express similar or same symptoms within a short period of time, (ii) people at the same place die within a short period of time, (iii) someone starting to express certain symptoms after a 'sick individual' had been in close proximity with him/her, and so on. There are many possible explanations that can be attributed to these observations, among which, "a pathogenic virus exists, that has passed between these people and caused those symptoms" is just one possible explanation. Now, these possible explanations has to be drafted as hypotheses. Each and every hypothesis has to be tested for with equal importance, by following The Scientific Method, to arrive at valid conclusions.
