When I was shopping with my host family, I noticed that one of my favorite American brand shirts was made in Bangladesh but had a U.S. logo. I already knew why, but I asked for their opinion anyway. I asked why most U.S. products are made in different countries, even though they are of great quality.
My host mom told me a story about a Chinese woman she had seen in a YouTube video. The woman works in a factory where they make jeans. She lives in a small corner of that big factory, and no one even notices her. She works far from her home and family. These jeans are sold at high prices in America, but the employees in China get paid very little. My host mom also mentioned that the air in China is very bad because of all the factories. When she was in China, she always wore a mask because it was required due to the poor air quality.
She said it was very sad—employees work for such low salaries, can’t even go home, and yet these products are sold for high prices in the U.S. She also explained how government policies and politics play a role in all of this.
