The Sunnah of ‘Umar رضي الله عنه

‎When ‘Umar was a khalifa, he noticed a man who no longer used to attend his gatherings so he asked about him, people told that he became alcoholic & is lost, so leave him & move on. But ‘Umar insisted to a plan to protect his health & Hereafter.

He sent a letter to this man with just one verse of Surah Ghāfir,

“Forgiver of sins & Accepter of repentance, severe in punishment, infinite in bounty. There is no God but Him, to Him is the Ultimate return”
[40:3]

He instructed to give this letter to him directly. He also ordered those in the congregation to supplicate for this man.

When the man read the letter, he shed into tears & repented to Allah & made a quick transition to leave Alcohol behind.

‘Umar heard this, he gave his people a timeless lesson:

“That is what you should do when you see a person has fallen into error, then help him correct himself and don't be with shaytan against him”

[Tafsīr al-Qurtubi 15/256]

Ibn Mas’ūd رضي الله عنه said:

“The one who abandons the prayer has no religion!”
[Sahīh At-Targhīb: 574]

A man told Imām Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله to fear Allāh, and he began shaking and became pale.

Then Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله said:

"May Allāh reward you! We need to be reminded of this (constantly)!"

[Siyar A'lām an-Nubalā', 6/400]

Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله said:

“Perhaps losing what you wanted will cause you to turn to Allah, and getting it will distract you from Him...”
