What will the foreign jihadist groups do now that the war against Bashar is over?

🇨🇳 Turkestan Islamic Party - prepare for jihad in China. Syria is not the only safe haven they have but also Afghanistan. Western and Chinese intelligence are both concerned about the threat they pose but many in the western intelligence community see Uyghur jihadists as a useful tool to pressure China.

🇸🇾 🇺🇿 🇺🇿 Ajnad al Kavkaz, Tovhid vo Jihod, other Russophone Chechen/Turkic groups - continue to fight their jihad in Ukraine against Russia, perhaps seek terrorist attacks inside Russia. May be a conflict between them and the Russian bases which will pose a dilemma for HTS which claims to seek peaceful relations with Russia.

*🏴 *Senior Al Qaeda remnants - Hurras al Din no longer organized presence, but emirs still lurk. It's unclear whether HTS will crack down on them in the new Syria or not. Ansar al Tawheed promised to join other jihadi fronts once Syria is over, thus probably Africa and Pakistan/Waziristan. Potential logistic support to AQAP and Al Shabaab remains a problem, as does potential to launch attacks on the west. AQS and AQC remnants are still exposed to potential CIA dronestrikes. Not long ago, they have called to assassinate Ahmad al Sharaa/Al Jolani.

🏴 Ansar al-Islam and other Kurdish jihadists - interested in opening a front in Iraq, both Sunni Arab and Kurdish regions. Kurdish jihadists in Syria are generally not Syrian (who are more secular) but Iraqi. This poses a major security threat to Iraq which is determined to take any military action against new Syria over concerns of jihadist threats, and also the various political parties of Iraqi Kurdistan. Syrian Kurds are also nonetheless exposed to radicalization among some of their more Islamist members of the community.

🇸🇾 🇸🇾 🇸🇾 🇸🇾 Syrian jihadi factions of SNA, Ahrar al Sham, Jaysh al Islam, Levant Front and other groups - these groups are not directly tied to Al Qaeda but have had strong affiliations (for example, Abu Khalid al Suri for Ahrar al Sham). Over the years they have received varying Turkish, Qatari, and Saudi support. Since their historic collapse in their strongholds at the hands of regime forces, they have fled to Turkey and began to integrate into the SNA, but recently have returned to the rest of Syria. These groups are known for clashing over local disputes. Time will tell what to make of them. Usage by Erdogan's government as mercenaries is a strong possibility.

🇸🇾 🇸🇾 🇸🇾 🇸🇾 Turkmen factions of SNA - continue to be proxies of the Turkish state and serve in expanding Turkey's sphere of influence in northern Syria. Possible reapproachment with Turkish foreign fighters from Turkey designated terrorists by the Turkish state?

🏴 The Islamic State organization - rejects the new Syria as an apostate democratic project and has vowed to fight it, alongside the SDF. Major prison breaks throughout Syria and Iraq are a major threat, including possibly the Al-Hol and Roj camps where countless family members of ISIS fighters remain to this day. Historically, HTS has cracked down on ISIS cells and was even accused by ISIS of killing their emir. Likewise ISIS also probably has their sights set on Al Sharaa/Al Jolani and other HTS/new Syrian officials.

That's not everything but a quite comprehensive list of what we can expect going forward.
