*The graph shows the total demand of 4 types of fiber, including polyester, cotton, cellulosic and wool on a global scale between 1980 and 2015. Units are measured in million tons (m t).

Overall, the need for these kinds of textiles, except for wool, increased over the years, with the most considerable change seen in polyester. Polyester had become the most in-demand textile, far surpassing other materials by the end of the period.

In 1980, cotton had the highest demand, at approximately 15 m t, while polyester started with about 5 m t. Cotton maintained its leading position until 1995 when the demand for cotton and polyester was the same (20 m t). A noticeable rise of around 10 m t was recorded in cotton demand in the final year. Similarly, polyester experienced a sharp rise to 70 m t in 2015, making it the dominant fiber.

The demand for cellulosic and wool was, on the other hand, significantly lower than the two, each under 5 m t in the beginning. Over the next 20 years, both figures plateaued at around 5 m t and 3 m t respectively. The demand for the former then started to fall, finishing the period with a mere 1 m t, however, the latter had doubled to 10 m t by 2015.
