Boiling water is an effective method of sterilising, but involves handling potentially contaminated water and is fairly energy intensive. Other sterilising methods involve chemical sterilisers which have associated hazards and health effects when ingested.

Another physical method of sterilisation like boiling is UV sterilisation. Perhaps there's a way to set up irradiating water with UVC light, products for this likely already exist I haven't looked into them. However UVC bulbs are not too expensive and use much less electricity than manual boiling.

If basic utilities like the water supply continue to degrade with societal entropy, loss of actualised competence, etc. perhaps a set up like this should be investigated.
