One of the biggest mistakes people make in business, especially beginners, is trying to come up with something totally new or "reinvent the wheel." Let me explain what this means and why it can hold you back.

A lot of people think they need to come up with a brand-new idea to succeed in business. They believe that in order to make money, they must invent something completely unique that nobody has ever thought of before. While it’s great to be creative, this isn't how most successful businesses work.

The truth is, the best business leaders don't always invent something entirely new. What they do is take ideas or products that already exist and make them better. They build on what’s already out there and improve it in small but important ways.

For example, Elon Musk, who is famous for companies like Tesla, didn’t invent electric cars. Electric cars have existed for a long time. What Musk did was take that existing technology and improve it, making electric cars look cool, more efficient, and something people actually wanted to drive.

Let’s look at another example: Mark Zuckerberg. He didn’t invent social networks. Websites where people could connect and share with each other existed before Facebook. What Zuckerberg did was take the idea of a social network and gave it a user-friendly interface, making it easier to use and more visually appealing. This small improvement made a huge difference.

The point here is that you don’t always need to search for the next big, completely new thing that no one else is doing. Instead, look for something that is already working—something that has a future—and find ways to make it better. This is the key to success.

Dropshipping works is the same way, you do what is working first and you will get results. You can then do your own thing once you build a brand.

In fact, this is what many of the most successful businessmen and women do. They don't waste time trying to invent something brand new. Instead, they improve on what’s already available and find ways to make it more valuable.

There’s a reason why people who invent things are usually engineers or scientists, not businesspeople. That’s because the real money, in business, is made by improving, not inventing. Engineers and scientists invent new technologies, but it’s the businesspeople who figure out how to make those inventions better and turn them into something that everyone wants to use or buy.

So, if you're thinking about starting a business or working on an idea, don’t stress too much about coming up with something totally original. Find something that already works, study it, and think about how you can improve it. That’s where the real success comes from.

To wrap it up: Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, focus on making the wheel smoother, faster, and cooler. This approach will give you a better shot at succeeding in business than trying to start from scratch. Keep that in mind as you move forward, and you’ll find it easier to make progress.

Peter Thiel's 7 Questions for Startup Success

Peter Thiel is a billionaire worth $7 billion. He co-founded PayPal and invested early in Facebook, SpaceX, and Airbnb. Thiel has a talent for spotting "unicorns" – startups valued at over $1 billion.

If you’re thinking about starting a business, you can learn a lot from Thiel.

Here are the 7 important questions he asks every founder before investing:

1. The Engineering Question
Can you create breakthrough technology instead of just making small improvements?

Innovative companies aim for huge, game-changing improvements, not just small tweaks. Think about how smartphones revolutionized communication compared to simple updates on regular phones.

Example: Instead of making a slightly better battery, create a battery that lasts 10 times longer.

2. The Timing Question
Is now the right time to start your business?

Certain companies succeed because they launch at the perfect time. They solve new problems that arise due to changes in technology or society.

Example: Social media platforms like Facebook became popular as more people started using the internet regularly.

3. The Monopoly Question
Are you starting with a big share of a small market?

It's easier to dominate a small market where you can make a huge impact than to compete in a large market with lots of competition.

Example: Focus on a niche market, like high-quality vegan snacks, where you can be the best, rather than trying to compete with all snack foods.

4. The People Question
Do you have the right team?

A great idea is nothing without the right team to make it happen. You need people who share your vision and are willing to work hard to overcome challenges.

Example: If you want to start a tech company, you need talented engineers, designers, and marketers who are passionate about your project.

5. The Distribution Question
Do you have a way to deliver your product?

Even if you create an amazing product, it won't sell itself. You need a strategy to get your product into the hands of the right people.

Example: Develop a solid marketing plan and find distribution channels to make sure your product reaches your target audience.

6. The Durability Question
Will your market position be strong 10 or 20 years from now?

Thiel believes a company's true value lies in its potential for long-term success. Aim for a market where you can be the leader and grow without too much competition.

Example: Enter a growing market, like renewable energy, where you can establish yourself early and expand as demand increases.

7. The Secret Question
Have you found a unique opportunity that others don’t see?

The best opportunities are often hidden in plain sight. They might seem difficult, but they're achievable with the right approach.

Example: Identify a common problem that hasn’t been solved effectively yet, like creating affordable and stylish eco-friendly clothing.

Applying Thiel's Questions to Your Startup

When I founded Wibblex in November 2022, these questions helped us scale to making Kes 300,000 to Kes 500,000 per month in under two years. Understanding our vision from the start was crucial.

By asking yourself these 7 questions, you can improve your chances of building a successful startup. They help you focus on the most important aspects of your business and guide you toward making smart decisions.

Summary of Key Points

  1. Engineering: Aim for breakthrough technology.
  2. Timing: Ensure now is the right time.
  3. Monopoly: Start with a large share of a small market.
  4. People: Have the right team in place.
  5. Distribution: Develop a strategy to deliver your product.
  6. Durability: Plan for long-term success.
  7. Secret: Find unique opportunities others don’t see.

By using Thiel's framework, you can evaluate and build your startup with a better understanding of what it takes to succeed. Remember, there’s no guarantee of success, but these questions will significantly increase your odds.
