The Story of Dashrath Manjhi – The Mountain Man
In a small village in India, a poor laborer named Dashrath Manjhi lived with his wife. His village was isolated from the nearest town by a massive mountain, making it extremely difficult for people to access healthcare, education, and other basic necessities.
One day, Manjhi’s wife fell seriously ill. With no quick way to reach a hospital, she passed away before he could get her medical help. Devastated and heartbroken, Manjhi made a vow—he would break the mountain that had taken his wife’s life.
Armed with just a hammer and chisel, he began to carve a path through the solid rock. People mocked him, calling him crazy. But for 22 years (from 1960 to 1982), he worked alone, day and night, breaking the mountain piece by piece.
Finally, after two decades of relentless effort, he carved a 110-meter-long (360 ft), 9-meter-wide (30 ft) path through the mountain, reducing the travel distance from 55 kilometers to just 15. Thanks to his determination, his village finally had easier access to hospitals, schools, and markets.
Today, Dashrath Manjhi is remembered as "The Mountain Man", a symbol of perseverance and unwavering dedication. His story teaches us that no obstacle is too big if we have the courage, patience, and determination to overcome it.
👉 Lesson for students:
Hard work, persistence, and belief in yourself can move mountains—literally! If one man with a hammer could break a mountain, imagine what you can achieve with the right mindset and effort. 💪
“Let your mind become a lens, thanks to the converging rays of attention; let your soul be all intent on whatever it is that is established in your mind as a dominant, wholly absorbing idea.”
