Students in university should be specialized …

Students in university should be specialized in one subject rather than to develop a wider range of knowledge in many different subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Upon graduating from university, students often encounter the aftershock of reality, which punches them hard in the face. That was the case with me. It was so naïve of me to believe that I could lend a promising job without the involvement of nepotism and the influence of money. I feel like I was in my own world, where everything worked in compliance with the rules of equality and fairness. After the ecstasy of accomplishing something big in my life had faded, I realized that I was thrown in the ocean of hustle that a typical adult had to deal with on a daily basis. I embarked on my quest to conquer the job market with my bachelor’s degree in Economics, an IELTS score of 6.5, and my modest CV in three languages, which was, it seemed to me, appealing enough to attract the potential employers. If only I knew how mistaken I was…

My day would start with exploring my options and visiting several targeted locations to test my luck. Wherever I went, I was given the same answer. It was like a broken record: “Sorry, we don’t have a vacancy here” or something like: “Sorry, we don’t hire someone who isn’t experienced”. Nobody even looked at my certificate or diploma. Nobody cared enough to give me a chance demonstrate my skills, gain that experience, or reach my potential. I am not trying to draw a picture of a victim of myself here. I was probably too reluctant to take off my rose-colored glasses, instilling in myself false hopes of a happy ending. While the desire to graduate faster and feel significant by having a job seemed too alluring, nobody warned about the possibility of being crushed under the heavy weight of those illusions. Mine were quite colorful, though: me, dressed in a fancy suit, with a business lady-like demeanor, rushing to complete tasks while deriving immense pleasure and channeling ever-flowing energy to make a difference with my work. The word “work” didn’t even fit the context. In my mind, it was replaced with “my contribution”, and “my share”. Being delusional is my thing, I guess.

The days were so uneventful and tedious that I couldn’t help but wonder if I would ever be able to change anything about it. My infantile brain couldn’t just grasp why would nobody want me? Because I knew me: I was loyal, obedient, enthusiastic, and most importantly, willing to learn and grow. Employees would seem to be rather interested in someone who benefited them financially – that is nothing new, actually. What could a gullible girl in her early 20s offer? I pathetically lacked self-confidence and faith in myself. Rejections further exacerbated the situation, breeding anxiety and desperation inside. Societal expectations, parental pressure, and personal demands never gave me a moment of respite. I used to compare myself with my course mates, some of who were on the verge of expulsion and had no particular knowledge, yet somehow succeeded in being employed in different prestigious organization. I swear it felt like a mockery of the universe.

You might ask: what was the big deal? Some people never work in their lives, and they still enjoy it. Well, that wasn’t about me. The feeling of being futile, helpless, and unneeded reigned my entire existence, leaving me in the darkness. So, if you ever question the importance of occupation, bear in mind its immense role in shaping an individual’s self-image.

Deep down, I knew I would be fully compensated with for all those days when stagnation would persist. I so hopelessly wanted to be buried with work and busy all the time that this obsession seemed to drive the opportunities further away from me. However, life is not all about gloomy days. The events/people/places that followed were a true blessing that was worth every single tear and heartache I had to endure.

It is observed that in many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes? And what will be the effects on society?

The line graph illustrates the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three countries, Japan, Sweden and USA at 20-year intervals. Overall, the percentage of senior people is predicted to increase in all countries. While the elderly citizens in the USA were dominant at the beginning of the period, by the end of the period it is predicted that the rate of people who are 60 or above will rise.

Looking at the details, the percentage of senior inhabitants was around 8% and this rate had begun to increase dramatically until it reached 15% by 1980. This percentage slightly decreased by 1% by 2020. The population aged 65 and over ,however, is forecast to climb significantly to 23% by the end of the span. The older people's proportion in Sweden mirrored the percentage of the USA until 2000 albeit it was lower level.

When it comes to Japanese elderly citizens, they accounted for a negligible 5% and decreased continually by 2% until 1990 although this rate began to go up minimally to 5%, showing the same level with its original level, until 2010. This proportion is expected to soar and reach the highest level of around 27%, exhibited in the chart.
