One hundred years ago, on the 11th December 1924, Edward Appleton conducted an experiment that proved the existence of a radio-reflecting layer high in the upper atmosphere.

This kickstarted a whole new realm of science into what was to become known as the ionosphere.

Now in 2024, Chris Scott, Professor of Space and Atmospheric Physics at the University of Reading in the UK is continuing Appleton’s important work to help us better understand the ionosphere, which is vital for efficient operation of GPS, radio communication, satellite operations.
