Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
Love of knowledge and seeking it is the foundation of every act of obedience.
And love of the world and wealth, and seeking it, is the foundation of every sin.
Some of the Salaf said: “Suppose that one heard that there are those who are better than him in obeying Allāh, he should become sad for being surpassed in obedience.”
"Undoubtedly, the path of seeking knowledge is difficult and bitter, but its outcome is great. Therefore, it requires immense patience and perseverance." 🪶
The day of Ashura is the day that Musa (AS) and the believers were saved from they tyrant, Firawn.
Then We inspired Musa (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain. (63) Then We brought near the others [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) party] to that place. (64) And We saved Musa (Moses) and all those with him. (65) Then We drowned the others. (66) Verily! In this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers. (67) And verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. (68)
[Surah Ash Shu’arah, Verses 63-68]
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Medina and he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. The Prophet said, “What is this day you are fasting?” They said, “This is a great day in which Allah saved Moses and his people, and he drowned Pharaoh and his people. Moses fasted on it due to gratitude, so we also fast on it.” The Prophet said, “We are more deserving and are closer to Moses than you.” The Prophet fasted the day of Ashura and he commanded fasting on it.
[Sahih al-Bukhari 3397 and Sahih Muslim 1130]
The virtue of fasting in Ashura is that it removes 2 years worth of sins.
Abu Qatadah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about fasting the day of Arafat and he said, “It will expiate the sins of the previous and upcoming years.” Then, the Prophet was asked about fasting the day of Ashura and he said, “It will expiate the sins of the past year.”
[Sahih Muslim 1162]
It is recommended to fast 2 days (either the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th) to distinguish between us and the Jews.
Al-Hakam ibn al-A’raj reported: I went to Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, and I said, “Tell me about fasting the day of Ashura.” Ibn Abbas said, “When you see the crescent of the month of al-Muharram, count the days and wake up to fast on the ninth day.” I said, “Is this how the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, fasted it?” Ibn Abbas said, “Yes.”
[Sahih Muslim 1133]
My beloved grandmother returned to our Lord yesterday, would really appreciate if you could keep her in your du’ā,
ʿAbd Allah said : “I heard that Sufyān married her.”
Al-Bayhaqī reported that Shurayḥ said: “When I am afflicted by al-muṣībah (ie: misfortune and adversity), I praise Allāh four times for it:
I praise him for it could have been far worse,
I praise him for granting me the patience to bear it,
I praise him for allowing me to recollect the (potential) reward awaiting me,
And I praise him for not making it (the calamity) an affliction in my religion.”
Then he said: “Waiting (patiently) for relief (from grief or suffering) is ʿibādah;
For indeed calamities do not last (forever).”
