Aug. 18, 2024— Nearly 70 million people in southern Africa are grappling with the dire consequences of an El Niño-induced drought. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) reports widespread food shortages, pushing some families to desperate measures like eating grass seed.

Zambia and Zimbabwe have declared the hunger crisis a state of disaster, while Lesotho and Namibia urgently seek humanitarian support. In landlocked Malawi, the situation is particularly acute. An estimated 9 million people—almost half the nation's population—are in need of assistance. Shockingly, half of those affected are children. Malawi relies heavily on rain-fed agriculture, and this year's worst midseason dry spell in over a century has devastated crops.

In Jangiya, a small farming village in southern Malawi, families are plucking grass seed from parched fields after their crops withered in the scorching heat. Some have even resorted to digging up poisonous tubers in their desperate hunger. Heads of state from the SADC acknowledge that the 2024 rainy season has been exceptionally challenging due to the late onset of rains caused by El Niño.

For subsistence farmers like Masautso Mwale, the drought—beyond his control and exacerbated by climate change—has forced him to find increasingly dangerous ways to survive. “My life became unbearable during the drought,” he shared. His usual harvest of 18 bags of corn and cassava dwindled to just two, leaving him and his family hungry until the rains return in October¹.
