*The pie charts compare sales of retail products through online purchases in New Zealand in 2003 and 2013. Overall, there was a noticeable discrepancy in the proportion of products purchased. While big amounts were spent on travel in the former year, film and music were in high demand in the latter one.

In 2003, people’s expenditure patterns were distributed as follows: travel accounted for the largest share, representing 36 % of money allocated. Film and music, as well as clothes, followed closely behind with 21% and 24%, respectively. Notably, books constituted the lowest figures of 19%.

By 2013, the proportions in the mix changed noticeably. The percentage disparity between the two top expenses narrowed down, with a proportion of money spent on travel declining to 29% and entertainment increasing to 33%. The share of money spent on books saw an increase of 22%, making it the third most significant sector, surpassing clothes, which experienced a drop of 8 %.
