𝑴𝒊𝒕𝒐𝒔 𝒚 𝑳𝒆𝒚𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒔 𝑴𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒔, 𝑨𝒛𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒔, 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒂𝒔 𝒚 𝑴𝒖𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒔

𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏̃𝒂: Los MITOS y las leyendas de los antiguos pueblos de alta cultura en América están contenidos, sobre todo, en las numerosas crónicas y relaciones del tiempo de la Conquista y de la Colonia. Si se toma en cuenta cuán poco fue el material de esta índole que los griegos y romanos coleccionaron entre los pueblos con los cuales se pusieron en contacto, no se les puede negar a los cronistas españoles el reconocimiento de sus méritos, sobre todo si se considera que ellos, en su mayoría, no provenían de la casta de eruditos, sino que eran monjes, soldados o empleados administrativos, entre los cuales, debido a sus mismas ocupaciones, no se debe presuponer un especial interés en este tipo de relatos. Sin embargo, gracias a su diligencia de coleccionistas poseemos hoy en día un cuadro general del mundo mítico de los antiguos pueblos de América y a ello debemos que se hayan salvado por lo menos grandes fragmentos de las leyendas acerca de sus dioses y de sus héroes.

Four days ago, I successfully defended my doctoral dissertation, “Heidegger’s Ins and Outs of Plato’s Cave: The Mythical Liberation of Education in Heidegger’s On the Essence of Truth”.

“There is an underground cave. At the dark bottom, there are humans who have been imprisoned there since birth. Their world, their truth, consists of dim shapes and sounds flickering and bouncing off the wall in front of them. Their whole existence rests in the reception of, chatter about, and games around these shadows. Nothing else occurs to them. Then, once upon a time, one of them was freed, made to stand up, and moved to discover that higher up in the cave is a barrier and a fire, where other humans are carrying objects and talking amongst themselves. At first painfully blinded, dazed, and confused, the freed prisoner gradually realizes that what is unconcealed here is what was concealed at the bottom of the cave, i.e., what was mistaken to be the unconcealed. In the face of the dawning and daunting questions “What is (t)here?” and “What does this all mean?” the newfound discoverer wishes to retreat back to the familiar shadows, but he is forced up again, this time out of the cave altogether. He is blinded and pained even more intensely and finds himself faced with a lengthier trial of acclimation with far more significant, even infinite horizons to be unconcealed. First, he gets used to shadows, to the reflections of other humans and things in the water, to things themselves, the sky and heavens at night, and then the diurnal sun, which he realizes to be the illumination that reigns over and makes everything visible. The escaped prisoner remembers his situation and fellow prisoners back down in the cave. If he were to return, he would go through being blinded again, through a reverse concealment, and with his poor vision, dazedness, and pained existence, his fellow prisoners would surely reject his claims and stories of an actual world elsewhere. Should he try to free them forcibly, turn them around, and drag them up, they would surely kill him. Nevertheless, he must return and turn them around, for liberation to what truly is is not his convincing claim and report about what there is, but the turning, the experience of the happening of liberation between unconcealment and concealment. He is no longer an escaped prisoner but a liberator, a philosopher, an enactor of the (hi)story of liberation. Only god knows whether this whole story is true, but it takes a liberator to tell and relive it with others… “
