This was one of the monumental reliefs (5m high) to decorate the Grosser Bogen, a monumental arch to be built in the center of Germania, to which Berlin was to be transformed after the war was won (about 1950). Designed by state architect Albert Speer, was intended to be a war monument dedicated to all fallen soldiers of the Reich.

The relief depicts a heroic warrior with a drawn sword, iconographically similar to the monumental figure of «Bereitschaft» of 1939.

In 1942 a Arno Breker-exhibition was held in the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. At the opening of the exhibition on 15 May, Aristide Maillol described Breker as ‘Germany’s Michelangelo’.

The exhibition was covered on the front page of the New York Times and Bild, and i.a. in the Guardian, Le Monde, Le Figaro, Paris Match, Spiegel, Welt, Tagesspiegel, El Pais and all Dutch News papers. On television the exposition was covered by the ARD, ZDF, Aljazeera, and all major television channels in The Netherlands.

A detail of a pencil drawing of one of the largest buildings planned to be created in the history of man, the Volkshalle (People’s Hall) also called Große Halle (Great Hall), a massive architectural project envisioned by The Austrian Painter and led by his architect, Albert Speer. This building was the most important project of the entire regime of NS Germany which was to be the center of the new Welthauptstadt Germania.

A colossal statue of Atlas holding up the Cosmos and another of Tellus holding up the Earth were proposed by Breker.

The inspiration for the structure had come from Hadrian’s Pantheon located in Rome, Italy, which encouraged a similar shape and structure to the Volkshalle, especially the feature of the dome.

No part of the building was ever constructed.

Black patinated figure of a nude youth carrying a torch. Excellent elaboration of the muscles and superficially modelled study of the head, the smooth plinth signed by the artist with “A. Breker”. Original grey-black marble plinth with minor chippings. Overall height 41 cm.

The study offered here already shows all major elements of the corresponding monumental figure: a frontal alignment with the spectator, the close study of arm and leg movement.

Breker draped a cloth over both shoulders of the youth missing in the final version of the sculpture.
