?An underground ant from Australia was named after Voldemort

Writing in ZooKeys magazine, Mark Wong and Jane McRae described a surprising species of ant they discovered in March 2023 in the Pilbara region of western Australia. While conducting research on underground invertebrates, they extracted two ants from a survey well, which were distinguished by their small size, long limbs, pale coloring and lack of eyes. Entomologists have determined that these insects belong to a previously unknown species of the genus Leptanilla.

The graceful body shape and lifestyle features of ants, which spend their entire lives in the dark, reminded scientists of Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter series of books. As a result of this association, the new species was named Leptanilla voldemort in honor of this antagonistic wizard.

Scientists studied the brain activity of children aged five months while interacting with their parents. It turned out that the more strongly the brain responded to this communication, the more words were included in the vocabulary of these children after a year and a half.

The study used magnetoencephalography to measure electrical activity in the brain. Areas of the brain involved in attention and sensorimotor processing have been found to be more activated during face-to-face interactions with parents.
