Prudence is called the “mother of all virtues” and is the ability to discern the right course of action in any situation while considering potential consequences.

Prudence isn’t just understanding what things are but knowing how to act. It also isn’t just the general understanding of proper procedure.

We can apply prudence to small-scale matters like gear selection or family decisions, as well as larger concepts in warfare like proportionality or just war.

Prudence is used in material decisions, like purchasing or making tools, and in spiritual decisions regarding morality and ethics.

While prudence is in us naturally to some degree, it can be honed through experience and understanding others’ experiences. Studying warfare and the lives of saints hones this virtue and helps one understand the second- and third-order effects of decisions.
