The Old Testament is about 2/3 of the Bible. God did not write over half of the Bible just to throw it all out for the latter third. In fact, one of the accusations the Jews and heathen give against God’s word is that the text is repetitive.

Amen! If everyone learned and remembered the first time, would we need to repeat anything? Would we need to switch the scriptures daily? If once was enough, then just eat once and never eat again. Just drink once and never drink again. Just sleep once and never sleep again.

We need food, water, and sleep far more than once; one might even say repetitively. Yet, that repetition is not our foe but our friend as we would die without it. And just as the body needs fed, our soul and spirit need fed to.

The story of Jonah is about soul-winning. It is about the tendency of saved believers running from this obligation. Of having a bad spirit, fear, resentment towards others, lacking the mercy and compassion of the Lord that He has graciously given us, and denying it to others. Of covering the light with a bushel.

Preach the gospel to every creature. Praise the good news and glad tidings to the ends of the earth. Let God use you for great things, refining you in the fire that you may be even more useful to Him.

Don't be like Jonah. Especially as we will see in Jonah 4.

It is funny how, despite Jonah not wanting to preach the Lord to the heathen, he still manages to get the men of Joppa to believe on the Lord God. He is literally the worst prophet and yet God uses him mightily.

Often Christians are reluctant to preach the word to others. We bury our talent of silver. We put our light under a bushel. We flee to Tarshish, running to the things of this world seeking to avoid our responsibility. And even in our dereliction, God uses us to proclaim His truth. How much more so if we let Him shape us into worthy vessels?

We shouldn't need to be swallowed up by a whale to be dragged back to where we need to be to do God's will. But if that's what it takes, He won't hesitate.

It is hard to kick against the pricks, as Jesus said to Saul on the road to Damascus. The Bible says to know to do good and to do it not is a sin.

Make this new year the year you dedicate yourself to doing the will of the Lord. To soul-winning and preaching His word, even to your enemies. To stop running away.

Don't make God send the storm.

The church at Philadelphia gets off the easiest from Christ's letters to the various independent churches of Asia Minor. They have kept the faith with patience and done great works, deserving crowns. They have everlasting life and the promise of Jesus that the Jews who persecuted them will be made to know He loves them. This promise extends to all who have overcome in Christ Jesus.

Believe it or not, despite what charlatans online say, there are churches like this today. You can likely find a church full of salt of the earth believers in every county in the US, or within driving distance of one.

Churches with the right gospel, the right mindset, filled with people who love the Lord with patience and faith, doing great works for the Lord, building each other up in persecution and edifying themselves in the word.

And the crowns they earn for themselves in the Kingdom do not rust or mold. They last forever. But that is not something available to you at home, alone, consuming Rumble videos and listening to weirdos spout nonsense.

True discipleship comes from joining the local church to be a worker for the Lord.
