On June 10, 1995, a tragic event unfolded in Lisbon's Bairro Alto. Under the pretense of celebrating Sporting's victory in the Portuguese Cup and the "Day of the Race," a large group of Portuguese neo-Nazis took to the streets, violently targeting black people they encountered. This horrific attack resulted in 11 victims, one of whom, Alcindo Monteiro, tragically lost his life.
His name has since become a symbol of the fight against racism and violence in Portugal.
In 2008, President Cavaco Silva declared June 10 a day to celebrate "the race, the day of the Portuguese, and the Portuguese communities," reviving a term associated with the Estado Novo fascist regime that was discarded after the Carnation Revolution in 1974.
The documentary "Alcindo" stands as a tribute to those who have resisted oppression and racism, reminding us of the social structures that persist and the rising influence of far-right ideologies in Portugal.
