Syrian refugee jailed for three years for the ‘deplorable’ rape of defenceless woman

A Syrian refugee was today jailed for three years for the “deplorable” rape of a vulnerable woman.

Former Belfast councillor Jolene Bunting has launched a High Court bid to overturn her three-year ban on seeking re-election.

An appeal against the disqualification is being mounted amid confirmation that she will not be prosecuted over any allegations of fraud by misrepresentation.

Her challenge to the sanction imposed by the Northern Ireland Local Government Commissioner for Standards (NILGCS) is due to be heard later this year.

Woodvale residents vent their frustration and anger at the area being flooded with immigrants.

Residents previously voiced concerns that foreign nationals have been given social housing ahead of local families and that women and children are scared to walk the area after dark due to the influx of foreigners, during a protest in January this year.

The concerns raised at January’s protest were ignored, and the protest now appears to have escalated.
