The graph illustrates the proportion of people living in urban areas in four Asian countries from 1970 to 2040, including future projections.

Overall, it is clear that the total proportion of city residents in all countries is expected to rise over the period shown. As for individuals living in the Philippines, there was a minimal decline between 1990 and 2010. Also, the figure for Malaysia took over other cities making it the most urbanized nation of all.

In 1970, the number of people living in the Philippines and Malaysia showed the same percentage, accounting for just under a third whereas only around 15 % of individuals lived in Indonesia which is the lowest proportion in the graph in 1970. Likewise, Thailand was the second least popular country among dwellers, making up just under 20%.

Regarding the other changes, we can see that the percentage of city dwellers rose significantly in Malaysia over the years which is predicted to exceed 80% by the end of the period. Notably, the figure for the Philippines saw negligible growth to almost half in 1990 after which it started to decrease minimally by 2010. However, this proportion is estimated to recover from over 40% to approximately 55% by 2040. When it comes to Thailand and Indonesia, both countries saw a gradual increase in their numbers of city residents while the latter surpassed the former in 2000 at 28% being expected to be the second populated city until 2040 (60%).

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is argued that all scientific researches should prioritize to better the quality of life for people. I disagree with this viewpoint for a number of reasons.

On the one hand, there are numerous arguments for why science is essential to enhance the lives of individuals. First and foremost, it usually aids people to have good standards of living including better amenities and convenient lifestyle. A prime example could be innovations carried out in science aiming at assisting people with disabilities when they live alone. There are some robots which act as nurses and take care of them easing their lives to some extent. Another major reason is that scientific research works in the food industry target to create more food availability since there exist major issues associated with food and water supply. If scientists work on the ways of transforming sea water into potable water and methods to apply to produce greater amount of food, it will definitely improve living standards in any corner of Earth.

On the other hand, I believe that there are far more crucial aspects of lives that need to be addressed by scientists. One major pursuit of scientists ought to be seeking cures for fatal diseases such as cancer since it still remains unsolved despite extended research. Scholars concluded that many more people are dying due to cancer or diabetes today rather than famine or malnutrition. In addition, environmental issues are also equally significant which require many scholars to draw more attention. Although there are some minor steps taken in this field, in my view, it is a lot more urging point to address rather than improvements in lives of individuals. For instance, increased carbon footprint leading to poor air quality and climate change are taking their toll to worsen the overall condition of life in the world.

In conclusion, although many consider science to be responsible mainly for enhancing living conditions in society, I am of the view that there are other equally vital aspects of life that need to be addressed by scientists such as healthcare and the environment.

**Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.**

People have differing views on whether competition or cooperation is more beneficial in various aspects of life, such as at work, in school, or in daily activities. While some argue that competition is necessary to attain success, I believe that collaboration leads to greater development and more sustainable outcomes.

On the one hand, proponents of competition believe that it can reap numerous benefits. Firstly, it can boost productivity by fostering a desire to outperform others. This drive to excel often motivates students, for instance, to stand out among their peers in terms of academic achievements. Another benefit of competition is that it helps individuals develop important traits like self-reliance, independence, and personal responsibility - qualities that are vital for long-term success. Although competition may sometimes lead to anxiety or unhealthy rivalries, it primarily encourages people to push their limits and adopt a spirit of inquiry, both in the workplace and in their personal lives. In professional environments, for example, employees competing for promotions or recognition are often more stimulated, which can lead to innovation and higher productivity.

On the other hand, I strongly believe that cooperation is a more efficient and beneficial approach. One key advantage of collaboration is that it helps people enhance their communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. This is largely because team members exchange ideas and learn how to express themselves openly and effectively. When individuals work together on a project, for example, they must contribute to the team's success, which fosters stronger social bonds and a sense of collective responsibility. Additionally, cooperation can reduce individual stress since tasks and responsibilities are shared equally among team members. In academic settings, cooperative learning encourages peer-to-peer support and mutual academic development, helping students build relationships and succeed together.

In conclusion, while competition may have its place in encouraging individual growth and productivity, I believe that cooperation leads to better outcomes overall.
