There is no evidence to suggest the descendants of Hindu Shahis ever converted to Islam. As a matter of fact, the stubborn resistance of the Hindu Shahis was the reason for the delayed Ghaznavid onslaught on the territory of what is now known as the 'Republic of India'.

Without the Hindu Shahis' control of the Khyber, Mahmud ibn Sabuktegin's devastations in Hindustan would have persisted much longer than they ultimately did.

However I still do maintain the primary contenders for the throne of the ethnicity of the Hindu Shahi dynasty were the ancient Gandhāran Hoḍi/Oḍi tribe. This is further substantiated by local traditions, which credit Raja Hoḍi with the construction of numerous ancient forts and palaces in the region, as documented by Cunningham.

This is precisely why I personally believe that the second most likely ethnic group for the Hindu Shahis are Brahmins, with Rajputs occupying a more distant third position.

This is what the Arabs under 'UbaidAllah Shuraih bin Hani - the chief of the army of Kufa saw when they ventured deep into ar-Rokkhaj, the territory the Zunbils.

So thorough was the dessication and so pitiable the condition of the survivors of the Muslim army that it came to be known as the Jaysh al-Fanā (the 'Doomed Army').
