If we don't waste resources, there would be enough for everyone. But if we are on situation, when thousands of newly produced cars rot on factorys' parking places, as they cannot be sold at the set price and manufacturer finds it more benificial to let the car rot, instead of selling it cheaper. Or when food is thrown out, as no one wants to produce less or lower the price, and at the same time people die of hunger in other countries.. It's an inadequate economy model. Of course, we are running out of resources, when resources are wasted.
How much an average person needs? Not that much. The problem is, that even in the "prospering" West majority of people are poor - as everything they seem to own is ether leased, either mortgaged. And by the time they make final installment, that property has already lost it's value.
There is enough for everyone in this world, if basic economy principles are revised. But that 1% wich owns 90% of everything is strictly against that

Capitalism doesn't work, as we don't have pure capitalism as described by Adam Smith with "invisible market hand" and etc. To me it looks we are falling into neo-feudalism or something even worse.
It may sound far too idealistic, but we need a mixture of healthy capitalism and socialism, when business is responsible, competition is fair and key spheres, like natural resources (oil, gas, and etc) are controlled by the government.
