Senate Republicans have been pushing for someone tougher than John Thune, whom they label a RINO (Republican In Name Only). Thune, for his part, has had a rocky relationship with Trump—he’s repeatedly criticized the president-elect and even called on him to drop out of the 2020 race. At the same time, Thune has a solid working relationship with Democrats. Time will tell whether he’ll try to strike a compromise to help the Republicans, or if he’ll end up throwing a wrench in Trump’s plans.
