“One day while I was collecting herbs in the jungle with Kedar Puri Baba, I inadvertently touched some stinging nettles and yelled some expletive. He quickly pulled some leaves from a krans plant growing right next to the nettles, and rubbed them on my skin.
Within moments, the stinging and burning had vanished.

“Isn’t it convenient,” I noted, “that nature places the problem and the cure right next to each other?”

“They are always neighbors,” Kedar Puri explained. “Everyone knows that!”

It dawned on me that their proximity to one another meant that there was a relationship between them. Kedar Puri had read the writing of nature’s text, made his commentary on it, and I had acquired a tidbit of knowledge. If I had looked where I was putting my hand, I would have seen a plant marked by thousands of barbed spears, and could have translated that as meaning, “Do not touch!”

I recognized that in order to read the Book of the World, it is necessary to see how things are marked.”

Growing up in Beverly Hills, Baba Rampuri felt drawn to the Naga Babas, an ancient order of naked yogis whom he calls the “Hell’s Angels of Indian Spirituality.”

In 1969, at age 18, he left California for India in order to immerse himself in Hindu spirituality.

Baba Rampuri claims to be the first foreigner initiated as a Naga Sadhu (a Hindu yogi of Naga tradition) of Juna Akhara, India’s most ancient order of yogis.

Today we concluded our Yule celebrations with the burning of our Yule goat, a symbolic offering of thanks and praise to our beloved ancestral deities.

“The Winter Solstice marks the official rebirth of the Sun. At this time, daylight is the shortest of the year, meaning that after the cusp of the Solstice, the Sun will begin to rise higher and higher, making each day longer until the glorious Summer Solstice, when the process is reversed. During these days, which traditionally were considered the time of Yule, from Dec 21-Jan 1, people celebrated in much of the same way that we celebrate the 12 days of Christmas now. Gifts would be given and an evergreen tree would be erected in the household. If a tree was not brought indoors, one would be decorated outside instead.  Sweets, treats, and various decorations would be arranged during this time, as there was much emphasis on creating joy and light within the home…”
