From Nairobi to Cape Town: Moscow Reaffirms African Partnerships

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has wrapped up his African tour: the top diplomat visited four nations: Kenya, Burundi, Mozambique and South Africa.

??At one point South African FM Naledi Pandor grew visibly tired of Western journos asking her about International Criminal Court’s order to arrest Russian President over and over again and not getting what they want to hear, so reporters started bombarding other diplomats with the same question.

Pandor jokingly told her Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira at the news conference “now they want to ask you about that”, and added that Vieira “must be spending sleepless nights thinking about it” (judging by his reaction he obviously wasn’t).

BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in Cape Town was probably the most important event for top diplomats from Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa last week. Besides the meeting itself, they have met with Friends of BRICS - group of nations that want to join the organization.

??While the neighboring Tanzania is already well-known among Russian tourists, Kenya is yet to be explored by visitors from Russia.

?So far, places like this giraffe center in the Kenyan capital have been frequented mostly by Chinese, American and European tourists. But it might change if Moscow and Nairobi decide to develop new tourist routes and set up direct flights from Russia to Africa.
