Making big decisions in life is never easy, especially when it means stepping into something new. I had one of those moments when I decided to become an IELTS instructor. At that time, I was already teaching English, so it wasn't like I was moving from selling goods to teaching, but it still felt like a big step.

It all started when I noticed that many students were asking me about IELTS. "How do I get a high band score?" "How do I improve my writing?" "Can you just take the exam for me?" Okay, maybe not the last one, but you get the idea. They needed help, and I realized if I specialized in IELTS, I could guide them more effectively. But the problem was, IELTS seemed like a giant monster exam. It had all these tricky question types, and Task 1 Writing seemed especially confusing. Writing 150 words about a strange-looking graph didn’t sound fun at all. It was like being asked to explain why a cat video went viral, except there were no cats, just numbers and confusing trends.

So, I sat down, did my research, and started training myself in IELTS. At first, it felt like I was drowning in band descriptors and exam strategies, but soon, things clicked. I started teaching IELTS classes, and guess what? I actually enjoyed it! Watching students improve, get their desired scores, and achieve their dreams was incredibly rewarding.

Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Although it wasn’t easy to move into a more specialized role, it turned out to be something I genuinely love. Plus, now when my students panic and say, "Teacher, the exam is so hard!" I just smile and say, "Don't worry, I felt the same way once. And look at me now, I could turn my own fear into a full-time job!"

Describe an important rule at school or at work.

Rules are everywhere in life. Some are important, and some just exist to test your patience. At work, it is the same story. I mean, there are rules that people strictly follow and there are others that often get ignored until someone finally decides to say, "Enough is enough." That is exactly what happened at my workplace, and the way they fixed it was... well, brutal.

I work as a teacher at a learning center, and every now and then, some teachers, including me, used to show up a little late for lessons. It was usually just a few minutes, nothing too serious, or at least that's what we thought. But apparently, the administration saw it differently. They had been keeping track of us. Then one day, they decided to put a stop to it by introducing a new rule. And the rule is that anyone who is late has to pay a fine. The amount depends on the number of minutes. For example, one minute costs one dollar. Fifteen minutes means fifteen dollars gone. And if someone ever thinks about being late for an hour, well, let’s just say they'll be teaching for free that day.

Since this rule was introduced, no one has ever dared to be late, not a single minute. Even the teachers who usually hit snooze twenty times now wake up before their alarms even ring. Some of my colleagues check their watches so often that you might think they are expecting a text from the president. Honestly it is both impressive and hilarious to watch. But at the end of the day, this rule actually makes sense. Because students pay for their lessons and show up on time, so if we, as teachers, walk in whenever we feel like it, I think that wouldn't be fair. So, as painful as it is to admit, this rule is actually a good one. But if they ever introduce a fine for yawning in class, I might have to find a new job.

Forgetting something important can be a nightmare, and I can tell you that I had my fair share of that experience. One time, I completely forgot to bring my best friend's birthday gift to his party, and let’s just say, it wasn't my proudest moment.

It happened last year. I'd spent days picking out the perfect gift, a really cool customized watch that I knew he would love. I wrapped it nicely, put it on my desk, and told myself, "There is no way I’m forgetting this." Then, on the day of the party, I got dressed, grabbed my phone, and walked out feeling all excited.

The party was amazing. Everyone was having a great time, and when it was finally time to give gifts, I reached into my bag… and found nothing. That was the moment my heart dropped. I quickly replayed all my steps in my head, and that is when it hit me. The beautifully wrapped gift was still sitting on my desk at home, looking fancy and useless.

My friend looked at me, waiting, and I just stood there awkwardly. My brain went into panic mode. Then, trying to save myself, I gave him a dramatic speech about how "true friendship is beyond material things." He laughed and said, "You forgot it, didn’t you?" I nodded, and everyone had a good laugh.

He did get his gift the next morning, but I'm still recovering from the pure embarrassment I felt that day. Now, I always double-check everything before leaving home, especially when it comes to birthdays… because, well, I'm not gonna give another speech about the importance of friendship.

Some purchases feel like a great idea at the time, but later, they make you wonder, "What was I thinking?" That is exactly what happened to me when I bought a fancy smartwatch a few months ago.

I had seen so many ads about how it could track my steps, monitor my heart rate, and even remind me to drink water. It sounded like having a tiny personal trainer on my wrist. So, one day, I walked into a store, feeling excited, and bought it without much thought. I imagined myself checking my fitness stats, looking all sporty and motivated.

But the reality hit me the moment I started using it. The watch kept buzzing every five minutes, telling me to move, breathe, and drink water. At one point, I felt like it was judging me. I was just sitting on my couch, relaxing, when it suddenly vibrated and told me, "Time to stand up!" I looked at it and thought, "Excuse me, who do you think you are?"

The final straw was when I realized I was barely using its features. Instead of becoming more active, I was just ignoring the notifications. So, after a week of being bossed around by my own watch, I decided it had to go.

Returning it was surprisingly easy. I walked into the store, placed the watch on the counter, and said, "I think this watch and I have different life goals." The cashier laughed and returned my money back without asking too many questions.

At the end of the day, I learned an important lesson. Just because something looks cool in ads doesn't mean it will fit into your life. Now I stick to checking the time on my good old phone, which, thankfully, doesn't tell me to stand up every ten minutes.
