**هَـٰۤأَنتُمۡ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ تُدۡعَوۡنَ لِتُنفِقُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ

ٱللَّهِ فَمِنكُم مَّن یَبۡخَلُۖ وَمَن یَبۡخَلۡ فَإِنَّمَا

یَبۡخَلُ عَن نَّفۡسِهِۦۚ وَٱللَّهُ ٱلۡغَنِیُّ وَأَنتُمُ

ٱلۡفُقَرَاۤءُۚ وَإِن تَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ یَسۡتَبۡدِلۡ قَوۡمًا غَیۡرَكُمۡ

ثُمَّ لَا یَكُونُوۤا۟ أَمۡثَـٰلَكُم﴿ ٣٨ ﴾Here you are - those invited to spend in the cause of Allāh - but among you are those who withhold [out of greed]. And whoever withholds only withholds [benefit] from himself; and Allāh is the Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away [i.e., refuse], He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you. Muhammad, Ayah 38

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, *“Whoever provides for a fighter in the cause of Allah has actually fought, and whoever takes care of the family of a fighter has actually fought.”

[Bukhari and Muslim]***

*وَأَنفِقُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تُلۡقُوا۟ بِأَیۡدِیكُمۡ

إِلَى ٱلتَّهۡلُكَةِ وَأَحۡسِنُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ

ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ﴿ ١٩٥ ﴾

And spend in the way of Allāh and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good.

Al-Baqarah, Ayah 195

Huthaifah (ra) said the meaning of the ayah is that when people do not spend their wealth in the path of Allah (jihad) they are throwing themselves into destruction.

Ibn Abi Hatim in his Tafseer says that this is the opinion of Ibn Abbaas, Ikrimah, al Hassan, Mujahid, Atta, Saeed bin Jubair, Abi Saleh, al Dhahak, al Suddi, Muqatil bin Hayaan, Qatadah, and others.
Al Qurtubi states in his Tafseer that Huthaifah, Ibn Abbas, Atta, Ikrimah, Mujahid and others say that you shouldn’t refrain from spending in the cause of Allah for fear of poverty. This is also the opinion of Bukhari and he didn’t mention any other opinion.*
