we with friends argue a lot on meritocracy, nepotism, patronage, and venality

while my circle of friends instantly get what we mean because they are well-read, most people dont seem to fully comprehend what meritocracy stands for, how it came about, and why it is so cherised (at least was) in the west.

this book gives an amazing introduction for you to understand meritocracy and its history. in the past, people would rise up because of their blood. yet around 18th century, enlightenment thinkers, J Stuart Mill, etc, advanced an idea that all men, including women (which was considered weird at the time) are equal, and they should rise up the social ladder for their hard-work and talent than their blood and relationships. it also explores the great chinese experiments on hypermeritocracy, its impact, and outcomes.

whats really attractive about this book is that beyond just learning about meritocracy, you also learn a good encyclopedic history of how people perceived social lifts and education.
