The University of Vienna is looking to hire 7 PhD researchers within the framework of the new interdisciplinary FWF doc.funds program "The Dynamics of Change and the Logics of Transformation: State, Society, and Economy at Critical Junctures", headed by apl. Prof. Dr. Jannis Panagiotidis and starting on 1 September 2024.The doc.funds program is integrated in two doctoral schools, the Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies (DSHCS) and the Vienna Doctoral School of Social Sciences (ViDSS). The researchers will also be affiliated with the Research Center for the History of Transformations (RECET) and the Research Platform “Transformations and Eastern Europe”.In this doctoral program, we build on and critically engage with Karl Polanyi’s theory of social, economic, and political change to understand transformation processes in both past and present and work towards a comprehensive theory of social transformation. This approach allows us to analyze multilevel transformation processes of the state, society and the economy in different times and geographical contexts. The seven doctoral projects we envision are situated in a field defined by interlocking key themes: the transformation of statehood & sovereignty, of labor, of mobility, and of rights. They focus on Central & Eastern Europe, with important transnational and global extensions. The objective is to combine insights from history and social sciences to study transformations in the wake of major ruptures during the 20th and 21st centuries. For more details and the application link, please visit: https://www.recet.at/event-news/news/detail/cfa-7-phd-positionsApplication deadline is April 12th, 2024.

As part of my appointment at the University of Mainz I'm able to offer one funded PhD position (50% of a TV-L 13 position, or very roughly 2,000 euros per month before tax). It involves teaching 90 contact minutes per week ( = two "semester hours").

Here's the English version of the call for applications:

https://stellenboerse.uni-mainz.de/HPv3.Jobs/jgu/stellenangebot/36812/Wissenschaftliche-r-Mitarbeiter-in-m-w-d?lang=en-US

The position is for three years, starting on 1 September 2024. Please circulate widely among potential applicants!

I would like to stress one requirement in particular: this position will go to a candidate who can work with at least one post-Soviet language OTHER THAN Russian. This is very important to me as part of my plan to diversify the department's teaching and research profile. Ideally (but not necessarily) this should be a language that I don't work with. But it doesn't have to be the official language of a post-Soviet country: Armenian or Tajik would be fantastic, but Uigur, Tatar, or Karelian would be perfectly OK as well. I'm very willing to supervise doctoral candidates who work only with Russian-language sources, but that's not who I'm looking for in this particular case.

UPDATE: There is really no need to ask individually whether language X would be OK. If it's a language spoken in the post-Soviet region that is not Russian, then it's OK. Ukrainian is OK. Belarusian is OK. Dargin is OK. Udmurt is OK. Romanian is OK. Abkhaz is OK. Estonian is OK. Turkmen is OK. And so on. The candidate with the best project and overall profile will get the position, as long as the project is not based entirely on Russian-language sources.
