When the Russian empire fell, Chechnya like others had a Revolution, and under the USSR it remained self governing. When the USSR fell, yeltsin refused to recognise their Independence; this is the main reason the war started. The commanding officers on both sides had fought together in Afghanistan, were trained together, and had been friends their entire lives. But now they were at war. The Russian commander had commands, and under yeltsin, if he refused them he and everybody under him would be found guilty of treason and likely executed. Lifelong friends who went through everything together and fought together years earlier forced against each other by the Capitalist regimes.
