Last month I got interviewed by police for 4 days after arriving in Paris. I was told I may be personally responsible for other people’s illegal use of Telegram, because the French authorities didn’t receive responses from Telegram.

This was surprising for several reasons: 

1. Telegram has an official representative in the EU that accepts and replies to EU requests. Its email address has been publicly available for anyone in the EU who googles “Telegram EU address for law enforcement”. 

2. The French authorities had numerous ways to reach me to request assistance. As a French citizen, I was a frequent guest at the French consulate in Dubai. A while ago, when asked, I personally helped them establish a hotline with Telegram to deal with the threat of terrorism in France.

3. If a country is unhappy with an internet service, the established practice is to start a legal action against the service itself. Using laws from the pre-smartphone era to charge a CEO with crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages is a misguided approach. Building technology is hard enough as it is. No innovator will ever build new tools if they know they can be personally held responsible for potential abuse of those tools. 

Establishing the right balance between privacy and security is not easy. You have to reconcile privacy laws with law enforcement requirements, and local laws with EU laws. You have to take into account technological limitations. As a platform, you want your processes to be consistent globally, while also ensuring they are not abused in countries with weak rule of law. We’ve been committed to engaging with regulators to find the right balance. Yes, we stand by our principles: our experience is shaped by our mission to protect our users in authoritarian regimes. But we’ve always been open to dialogue.

Sometimes we can’t agree with a country’s regulator on the right balance between privacy and security. In those cases, we are ready to leave that country. We've done it many times. When Russia demanded we hand over “encryption keys” to enable surveillance, we refused — and Telegram got banned in Russia. When Iran demanded we block channels of peaceful protesters, we refused — and Telegram got banned in Iran. We are prepared to leave markets that aren’t compatible with our principles, because we are not doing this for money. We are driven by the intention to bring good and defend the basic rights of people, particularly in places where these rights are violated.

All of that does not mean Telegram is perfect. Even the fact that authorities could be confused by where to send requests is something that we should improve. But the claims in some media that Telegram is some sort of anarchic paradise are absolutely untrue. We take down millions of harmful posts and channels every day. We publish daily transparency reports (like this or this ). We have direct hotlines with NGOs to process urgent moderation requests faster.

However, we hear voices saying that it’s not enough. Telegram’s abrupt increase in user count to 950M caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform. That’s why I made it my personal goal to ensure we significantly improve things in this regard. We’ve already started that process internally, and I will share more details on our progress with you very soon. 

I hope that the events of August will result in making Telegram — and the social networking industry as a whole — safer and stronger. Thanks again for your love and memes 🙏

Now that we are talking about abuse victims going to churches and exposing the abuse let me tell you about my first experience being abused by the church as an adult.

I was 18 years old, I chose to get into the porn industry out of desperation and need for money. I did porn for a couple months with LA Direct models Derek Hay and a man named Kevin (who has since died) owned the agency. Derek Hay of LA direct models was just recently indicted on trafficking charges, but let me get back to it.

I chose to do porn for a couple of months, I was on a porn set, something came over me, and I knew what I was doing wasn’t natural and I needed help. So, I freaked out on the set, told the producers I couldn’t do it, they were extremely mad. They called Derek Hay the owner of LA direct models and Derek named off everyone I loved, their addresses and told me I better do the shoot. I was scared and crying and told him ok. I asked the producer if I could get myself together because my makeup was running, he said no, and I was then gang raped on camera.

After that shoot I was scared and knew I needed help.

At that time I was living two life’s. Doing porn, and going to a church Rock Harbor Church in Costa Mesa California where Mike Erre was the head pastor. I called his assistant at the time and asked if I could come see the pastor. Now mind you, a 18/19 year old is still a child. But I knew I needed help and I thought I could get it from this pastor. When I went there i reluctantly told him what happened that day of being gang raped.

I asked him if he could help me. He said yes, of course.

I waited in his office what seemed like for hours. The office door opened and my heart sunk. Two of Derek’s Drivers, bodyguards, muscle, whatever you want to call them said you’re coming with us.

They drove me back up to Derek Hay mansion in Los Angeles, Derek told me he now owned me, and I would be living with him. This started my nightmare of being trafficked through the porn industry.

A few months later they were driving me and some other girls to a “private” and they took us to the Shark Club where Rock Harbor had overflow services. They lined the girls up, and I saw Mike Erre and some other familiar pastors walk in. I ignorantly thought, they are going to help us, but I was a fool.

Erre came up to me and said I’ll take her. It was some of the worst beating and torture I received from this pastor who I so foolishly thought was on the side of good. I was scared to speak out for a long time. In 2014 I wrote a book and came forward.

Mike Erre is now an associate pastor at a church called Journey located in Tennessee. I reached out to this church to speak with them about the abuse. Here are the emails. They told someone else inquiring not me that “they did an internal investigation and found no evidence of abuse”, yet they never spoke with me, or the 3 other girls that Mike Erre raped and tortured. Not one person from Journey Church in Tennessee ever talked to the survivors. They are knowingly and willingly having a pastor on staff that is a trafficker.

That one moment of trying to get help from Mike Erre changed my life. I was trafficked for almost a decade, through mega churches, sold to pastors, politicians and celebrities. What they stole from me came at a high price. So when survivors are telling you something, please listen.

See, these pastors escalate and the “church” covers it up. Please understand how many churches are involved and how big the cover ups truly are.

I have posted this before but let me post again to remind everyone that these churches are all in on it. 👆

Never silence survivors. Nobody ever deserves to go through this.

It takes a lot of courage to speak of the abuse. I was 13 when I got gang raped by two brothers named Michael and Steve Lovett of Beaumont, Texas. I didn't tell anyone about it until I was 15 or 16. I never reported it to the police. I was too ashamed. It was a horrific thing that happened. During the rape when they were whipping me with a belt and threatening me with "long d!ck Johnny" who was the third party, I began to pray for God to save me... I thought they would kill me and that I wouldn't return home. God instantly swooped me into the palm of His hand, and my body went numb, and the 3rd guy, Johnny, walked away limp... said he couldn't do it.

Reading Madyson's testimony made me remember what happened to me. It's been 30 years since that incident happened to me. If Madyson is brave enough to name her abusers, I will be, too.
