The allegations are serious. The French online newspaper Mediapart published a detailed investigation according to which the "independent" American investigative journalism network OCCRP is financed on a large scale by the US government. German media outlets including Der Spiegel, Süddeutsche Zeitung and NDR also cooperate with OCCRP.

According to Mediapart, the revelations were the result of months of investigations by a consortium of independent European news outlets, including Il Fatto Quotidiano (Italy) and Reporters United (Greece), as well as the US outlet Drop Site News. Notably, the media company Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) allegedly helped initiate the investigation, but then refrained from publishing it under pressure from OCCRP.

It appears the many media outlets were unaware the hundreds of journalists who work for the OCCRP are in fact funded primarily by the US State Department and other allied western governments. The OCCRP's investigations primarily targeted American adversaries like Russia and Venezuela. The US government and OCCRP insists it doesn't influence what is written, but all major hires can be vetoed by the US government and reporters would clearly understand the consequences in funding if they were to go after the wrong targets.
