The concept of bid'a in the Maliki madhab - A summary of Shaykh Hassan Al Kettani's doctoral thesis
The Messenger of Allah [peace and blessings be upon him] said:
"The evilest matters in religion are those that are newly invented, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire." [Sunan al-Nasā’ī]
Unlike other religions, Islamic beliefs and practices remains identical to what was revealed to the Last Messenger to Mankind [peace be upon him]. This is due to a central teaching: warning against bid'a (religious innovation).
This concept has been key to preserve divine and prophetic instructions.
But what is bid'a?
Are there different understandings?
Are there good innovations?
How did the early and latter Maliki scholars approach the matter?
Our beloved shaykh (and founder of Ibn Abdilbarr Academy) Hassan al Kettani spent years examining the work of Maliki scholars and has obtained his PhD in Fiqh and Usul al Fiqh after he presented his doctoral thesis: The concept of innovation in the maliki madhab - a comparative study between the work of Imam Al Shatibi and Imam Al Mawwaq" to a panel of renowned scholars.
Join shaykh Dr Hassan Al Kettani (Morocco) for an exciting talk on the summary of his doctoral thesis, which should reignite our love for the sunnah and islamic scholarship inshaAllah.

MUKHTASAR AL AKHDARI (MALIKI FIQH)
Allah has given us the exact pathway to acquire knowledge and by His permission increase our Taqwa.
In surah Al Imran, Allah says, which can be translated as:
"Be Rabbaniyyin because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied." (3:79)
Al Rabbaniyyun are those who cultivate and teach people in the correct manner.
More explanation of this term is found in sahih Al Bukhari, on the tongue Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)... and here lies the true secret to becoming a true alim.
Ibn Abbas said,
"Al Rabaaniyoon are those who teach the small knowledge before that which is advanced."
So, if you want to progress, start with "small books" which often contain the most important knowledge for Muslims, that which will take you to jannah if you sincerely apply it, or to hellfire if you ignore it.
One such book in fiqh is Mukhtasar Al Akhdari, a primer in Maliki fiqh taught throughout the Maghreb and West Africa >
