In a provincial town in Czechoslovakia, the fire brigade are having a beauty contest. The contestants are neither willing nor beautiful.

Of all the comedies to mock the dullness and parochialism of peasants-turned-leaders in the Eastern Bloc, this one is actually funny. Banned for "poking fun at the ordinary working man", Forman's vision is cynical and outlandish. The last film he made before his Hollywood turn.
