TIME TO PLANT FRUIT TREES
The weather is starting to warm up and the Spring rains are starting.
So, if you’re planning to get some fruit trees in, make it a job for this weekend
For best results:
- dig the planting hole twice the width and the same depth as the root ball of the tree
- sprinkle a handful of blood and bone into the bottom of the hole and sprinkle some soil over the top of it.
- put the tree into the hole and backfill with soil. Make sure the rootball is fully covered
- mound up a ring of soil around the perimeter of the hole (like to picture) to hold water
- drive in a stake on either side of the outside of the hole (like the picture)(not inside the hole as you’ll damage the roots) and tie the tree up with strips of an old sheet or similar
- spread mulch about 10cm deep but keep it away from the tree trunk as it can cause collar rot
- water once a day for a week, then once a week for a month, then once a month for a year (unless it’s really dry then water if the soil gets dry)

Apple seeds are starting to sprout inside apples at this time of the year.
So, if you cut open an apple (even a store bought one) and the seeds look like this, don’t throw them away. You can carefully remove them from the apple core and plant them and you’ll get a FREE apple tree. The variety might not be exactly true to type (ie the type of apples you get from your new tree may be different to the apple you got the seed from due to grafting of the mother tree) but you should get apples nonetheless.
Give it a go! Can’t go wrong with free fruit!!

How to Prepare Your Garden for Next Season’s Crop WITHOUT Crop Rotation - PART 2
Planting Root Vegetables:
- add a moderate of compost
- add a small amount of aged cow manure
- these will give you a nice free draining soil for root vegetables to grow in and a little fertiliser but not too much nitrogen so that you only get leaf growth
Planting Legumes:
- add lots of compost
- add aged sheep or cow manure
- these will give you a nice rich, free draining soil with plenty of nutrients
** IN ALL CASES: If possible, allow the garden bed or planter to sit idle for at least two weeks after adding compost and manure to allow worms, microbes, etc to start to incorporate them into the soil.

Hi Folks
I’ve been contemplating over the last few weeks how I can continue to help you as I feel like I’ve shown you most tips I can about the standard veggies we grow in our gardens. One day we’ll move out onto a property and there will be much more to show you as I reach back to my upbringing on the farm.
For now I’m thinking that there could be a couple of ways I can continue to support you moving forward:
- repost the videos we’ve shared together in past seasons as we progress back into that season as reminders and prompts on how to look after what you currently have growing
- be a place that you can continue to ask your questions so I can be here to help you when you need me
I’m open to ideas - what do you all think?
Remember - my main aim is to help you become even just a little more self sufficient.
??Beck
