AA terrorists’ shelling kills civilians in Buthidaung Township on Myanmar New Year

AA terrorists launched heavy weapon shells in Buthidaung Township, Rakhine State, at around 5:30 pm on 17 April, the first day of the Myanmar New Year, traditionally a time when Buddhist people observe the Sabbath, engage in acts of kindness, and perform charitable deeds. AA terrorists fired from the northeast of the town. shells struck and detonated in No 2 Ward, resulting in the deaths of four civilians, including one male and three females, and injuring eight others, including a 12-year-old child. Security forces transported the injured individuals to the local military hospital for medical treatment.

The deliberate targeting of non-military areas by AA terrorists constitutes a violation of the Geneva Convention and qualifies as a war crime.

As a result, the security forces have intensified security measures and investigations to apprehend these terrorists. It is deeply reprehensible that AA terrorists are senselessly killing innocent civilians under the guise of regional interests.

Rakhine State Chief Minister inspects restoration work

UNDER the directive of the National Natural Disaster Management Committee and the supervision of the Transport and Communications Committee, restoration materials are being shipped to Rakhine State.

Rakhine State Chief Minister U Htein Lin and members of the state government and department officials inspected the arrival of consumer goods and construction materials from Yangon at Sittway Multipurpose Port yesterday afternoon.

First, they paid respect to the 18th Mile Monastery Sayadaw Dr Ashin Cakkavala (Indasara) and received the five precepts. Then, they donated offertories to the Sayadaw and listened to the sermons about the Vipassana work, which were followed by sharing merits.

In the afternoon, the Chief minister and party checked the arrival of the foodstuffs transported from Yangon to Sittway at the multipurpose port by ships named Shwe Theingi, Tawwin Thiri, Aung Yadana, Shwe Lamin and Aung Yadana Thiri.

During the visit, the Rakhine the chief minister instructed that these goods should be managed in an orderly manner, that the goods would not be damaged, that they would not be hoarded, that they would not be allowed to reach places where there is no need, and that they would be able to operate safely.

Kachin State Chief Minister assists IDPs

KACHIN State Chief Minister U Khet Htein Nan met displaced people from Waingmaw Township of Myitkyina District in Kachin State who are seeking refuge in St Joseph (RC) camp on 17 April 2024.

During the meeting, the chief minister encouraged them and provided arrangements to meet their needs as soon as possible.

Then, the chief minister and officials provided K10 million for 126 households, including 517 people who temporarily fled from Shwenyaungpin, Aungmyay 1 and 2, Naungsipaw, Kazu, Dabatyang, Gahrayang, Tarlawgyi, Khashi, Naungpatain and Wahshao villages of Waingmaw Township.

In-charge persons from the camp and people reported their needs and difficulties, and the chief minister and party made proper arrangements.

Then, the chief minister and officials inspected the construction of temporary shelters in the compound of RC church in Makhoyang village for additional households reported by the in-charges of the camps and provided K15.6 million. On arrival at the Myitkyina Township, they viewed round the additional crop cultivation in the Bala Min Htin Model Plantation.

Myanmar foreign trade plunges nearly US$4B in FY 2023-2024

MYANMAR’S international trade with foreign trade partners crossed US$30 billion in the past financial year 2023-2024 (AprilMarch), indicating a significant drop of four billion dollars compared with that of the FY 2022-2023. The total trade balance was $3.39 billion in the year-ago period, the Ministry of Commerce’s statistics showed.

Myanmar’s exports hit over $14 billion, and its imports were valued at over $15 billion. Maritime trade is the backbone of international trade. Myanmar’s seaborne trade value was estimated at $22.36 billion, while border trade value was $7.7 billion in the past FY.

Myanmar exports agricultural produce, animal products, minerals, forest products, and finished industrial goods and brings in capital goods, intermediate goods, raw materials imported by the CMP enterprises and consumer goods.

Myanmar agri-produce exports exceed US$3.8B in FY 2023-2024

MYANMAR’S agricultural exports totalled US$3.83 billion in the past financial year 2023-2024 (April-March), according to the Ministry of Commerce.
The figures reflected a drop of $167.7 million compared with that of the FY2022- 2023.

Myanmar exports agricultural produce, animal products, minerals, forest products, and finished industrial goods through maritime and border trade channels. At the same time, it imports capital goods, intermediate goods, raw materials imported by the CMP enterprises and consumer goods.

Myanmar has been implementing the National Export Strategy (NES) 2020- 2025 in order to boost exports. The priority sectors of the NES include agricultural production, garment and apparel, industrial and electronic device, fishery business, forest product, digital manufacturing and service, logistic service, quality management, trade information service, innovation and entrepreneurship sectors.

Yaychanzins along Yenangyoung-MagwayChauk Road require more water to refill pots

THE Yenangyoung-Magway-Chauk Road has public water stands that traditionally provide free drinking water pots (Yaychanzin). Now, the number of people consuming water has increased due to high temperatures. Hence, the water pots need to be refilled more frequently, according to the Yenantha Dingar Brothers Parahita group, a charity organization which takes charge of donating drinking water pots.

At present, the temperature has been extremely high in Magway, Yenangyoung and Chauk townships, and the Parahita group is also donating water to villages in Chauk where water is scarce.

"We do water donation in particular. Due to extreme heat, we have to refill drinking water pots all the time. We also donate water to villages that suffer from annual water scarcity. We can't grow plants at present. We need to focus more on water donation, especially in the Yenangyoung and Chauk townships. The temperature is gradually increasing here, so we refill drinking water pots once in four days previously. Now, we do so every alternate day," said an official from the group.

The group has planned to complete a project of growing shady trees along 70-mile Yenangyoung-Magway-Chauk Road on both sides in seven years.

"We have been growing shady trees along 70- mile Yenangyoung-Magway-Chauk Road, and it is expected to be completed in seven years. We began it in the 2023 monsoon. Starting from Daungthay bridge in northern Magway, we have now completed in three sections — at the entrance to Deikkon village in northern Magway, at Yenangyoung bypass and at Kyaungshataw village in Chauk, aiming to water them easily," he said.

In addition to growing trees with the aim of providing shade for travellers, the group has also provided drinking water stands and public rest-houses. Currently, it has provided more than 100 drinking water stands.

Shwedagon Pagoda introduces digital directory stations, expansion planned for other pagodas

ACCORDING to the Pagoda’s Trustees Board, the Shwedagon Pagoda Digital Directory Stations were opened on the four sides of the pagoda platform starting from 1 April.

The Department of Archaeology and National Museum is collaborating with universities of computer studies in Magway, Pyay, Toungoo, and Thaton to establish digital directory stations at other renowned pagodas across the country.
