I’d like to make a humble request of my audience.

I have several hundred folks that utilize my various chats. Many folks have used these spaces to network, build and enrich themselves in many ways.

For that I am very happy. Exactly what I set out to do.

But they didn’t crop up out of nowhere. It took many years to build my platforms, network and procure these spaces to be fertile in this regard.

And then I share them with all of you. And I will continue to do so.

All that I ask is for some help with engagement.

I know I have tons of projects, products, paywalls etc. Not everyone has the funds to support all of it. And not everything is of everyone’s taste. That’s okay.

But this is the only way I feed my family. I’m locked in. I’ve given everything to the mission here.

If you’re a Dave respecter, you’ve benefited from the spheres I’ve created or you just enjoy the vibe. All I’m asking is to click like, react, drop a comment, book review, share it into other chats, whatever you want.

It takes less than a second to do those things and it helps me fight the algorithms that want to bury me.

You guys are my only allies in this thing. Boost your boy.

Blessings

The book needs a couple tweaks and we'll begin our print run. As you guys read from Tom here, Machen was one of the very first masters of supernatural horror.

The authors that get the most praise in the decades leading up to the 20th century were of the gothic variety. Bram Stoker, Poe, Mary Shelley and others. And rightly so. The aforementioned were brilliant.

But among them were several writers that are now more aligned with what was broadly called "supernatural literature". Ambrose Bierce, Algernon Blackwood, William Hope Hodgson, and Arthur Machen.

Unfortunately, these gentlemen have fallen a bit into obscurity outside of those who are really connoisseurs of old spooky reads.

In my opinion, these men, Machen especially, stand a cut above the rest. While Frankenstein and Dracula are iconic, they didn't age as strongly as the more forgotten supernatural literature of similar era.

What Machen and his peers pioneered was a sense of weirdness and outsideness that bent heavily into what we would now describe as "psychedelic".

Machen specifically created the entire genre we now identify as "Folk Horror". Ancient primeval forces and hideous magics that linger just beyond the veil within the dark wilds of the earth.

All of the tales in the collection are well over a century old and still stand today unchallenged as some of the greatest literature ever written. Not just as a study or appreciation for old art traditions.

Machen will slowly burrow into your psyche like a worm and the chilling echoes of his tales will haunt you whenever you're alone somewhere dark and wild.

My motivation is that every one of you who are respecters and defenders of western art traditions get a chance to read these masters and give them the space on your bookshelf they deserve.

If my words aren't enough of an endorsement, you should read what Lovecraft felt about him. Lovecraft modeled himself after Machen and all throughout Machen's works you will see where Lovecraft got much of his inspiration.

I pray you fall in love with these stories as much as I have.

Book will be available soon.

Yeah, it's just such a feeling of subtle horror. It's not over the top or blatant. The insinuations and implications are what makes him such a scary writer. It's like these maddening forces are so alien that you can't really speak directly about them. Like the words just aren't there. He was a master of making this sort of ambience in his fiction.

I love Machen. This is a great choice. Machen feels, to me, like mysterious and incomprehensible prehistoric forces. Imagine how a Roman, from the civilized world, felt in Britain in the initial encounters. These are shadowy chthonic people that you can't understand, that sort of slip through trees. Machen gives that feeling of the utterly alien prehistoric gods in his writing. If anyone here hasn't read him, I would certainly recommend this one.
