Last year I had an ambition …

Last year I had an ambition to organise an education project, but all the ideas that came to me didn’t inspire me. One day my friends took me to a horse club (they are teachers and they had a daytrip with kids), and there I finally got it: I wanted to create a Harry Potter book club! (I’m a devoted fan ?). It did work — it was an amazing time and I’m thinking of reviving it!

Vocabulary: “At the horse club I had a eureka moment — what if I started a Harry Potter club?“ (Pronunciation: eureka [jʊ(ə)ˈriːkə])

I usually have my brightest thoughts when travelling or doing something unusual, and you? :)

***?*** Can you always **stay focused …

? Can you always stay focused on one thing when talking to someone? I find it nearly impossible (especially when a conversation is particularly interesting)!

? Talking with people, I quite often get sidetracked (= to get distracted for a while halfway) when I remember something that happened recently.

So, back to English! As you …

So, back to English! As you well know, there are a lot of Latin phrases that are still used in English, and I occasionally hear one of them from my teacher Liam (ESL teacher ??):

"We may have better results addressing each problem on an ad hoc basis (=as they happen)".

Show me that you’re still here with a reaction to this post ❤️

Hey there!

Hey there!

I know I've taken a long pause, and that's because I started Irish dancing last November and it's become my main obsession for the time being. If interested, here’s what I’ve learned to do in 6 months

* New post coming* in a couple of minutes. Stay tuned!

Hello everyone!

Hello everyone!

My brilliant student now has a couple of time slots for those willing to study English with her (text me @li_atlanova).

? Rita is a Moscow State University student (Institute of Asian and African Countries) with a full-ride scholarship, having got 100 points for her final English (and Russian) exams (ЕГЭ)

?‍? She’s already got 4 years of teaching experience, and at the moment she’s taking regular consultations with me to perfect her teaching skills.

If you (or someone you know) want to work on your/their English with a very friendly and understanding teacher, who loves the language and is ready to help you all the way for a reasonable price (1000 rub. / 60 minutes), text me @li_atlanova.

?‍♂️Rita works with all age groups starting with 15+ y.o.

**Гомон,** ***?******?️******?******?*** **and Garm the Hellhound**

Гомон, ??️?? and Garm the Hellhound

I’ve just come across an interesting post about the origins of the word game and did my own research. Here we go:

GAME

? Proto-Germanic gamaną, (fun, amusement, game, sport), Old English ramen "joy, fun; game, amusement," common cognates: Old Norse gaman "game, sport; pleasure, amusement," Old Saxon gaman

☝️as well as Proto-Slavic *gomonъ (noise, uproar)

?Also, “game hunting” in Modern English means “hunting animals for food, trophy or both”. Why “game”, then? Turns out that back in time the European upper classes began hunting new and unique animals, terming them big game (lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, etc.)

? It made me think of my favourite Swedish folk band Garmarna — is it related to gamaną? Turns out that in Norse mythology, Garm is a great bloodstained hound who lives at the entrance to Hel. The band’s name can be translated as “These Garms). I can say I see a connection of “game” and “Garm”, though a hound usually hunts its prey (game), not being prey itself. On the other hand, see above that Europeans called unique animals this way.
